Dear Mr. Vanamamalai:

Thank you for contacting my office regarding the problematic experiences many consumers are facing with credit bureaus. I appreciate you bringing this matter to my attention.

Our country is now facing an economic crisis not seen since the Great Depression. While no is happy we've reached this point, I continue to work tirelessly with my colleagues in Congress make sure we protect the taxpayer as we try to get our economy back on track. As you know, credit scores determine whether a consumer qualifies for a loan, the amount of the loan, and the interest rate on the loan. A credit, or Fair Isaac & Company (FICO) score, is reported as a three-digit number ranging from 300 to 850. Three credit bureaus-Experian, Equifax and TransUnion-collect personal credit information and then calculate the individual scores.

With that said, I understand how important credit scores are for hard-working families and small businesses in the First State and across the country. Moreover, given the weakened condition of our credit markets, many Americans are having difficulty borrowing money to buy cars and houses, send their children to college, and obtain loans to keep their businesses running. In response, I will continue to work with President Obama and the new Congress to take the necessary steps to ensure our economy recovers in a healthy way.

In response to your concern, I would recommend that you contact the Delaware Bank Commissioner's Office at (302) 739-4235 for immediate assistance regarding your credit bureau. You can also contact my constituent services staff in one of my state offices:

New Castle County: (302) 573-6291

Kent County:  (302) 674-3308

Sussex County:  (302) 856-7690

In the meantime, please be assured that I will pass along the details of your correspondence to my colleagues on the Senate Banking Committee.

Thank you again for contacting me about these very important issues. Please do not hesitate to contact me in the future regarding this or any other matter of concern to you.

With best personal regards, I am

Sincerely,

Tom Carper
United States Senator
